Google Merchant Center problems on Squarespace

The store check reads your site. Fixes come with steps to paste into your pages.

How to start

Run the free store check, or create a ShieldKit account and add your site. The first full store check (up to 11 checks) is free.

The free check on the website runs 7 of the 11 checks, with no account and nothing to install.

How fixes work

  • Every problem comes with plain-English fix steps.
  • With Recovery, we write your refund and shipping policies from your answers, and draft your privacy policy and terms. You paste each one into your Squarespace editor, with steps for where it goes.
  • A Squarespace page has to be added to a navigation area, so put each new policy page in your footer.

Prices and hidden problems

  • Price Watch checks the prices on your product pages on Squarespace: the price Google reads against the price shoppers see, and strikethrough prices that aren’t a real discount.
  • With Google Merchant Center connected, it also compares each product with Google’s own price.
  • Free shows how many products are affected; Monitoring and Recovery list each one.
  • With Recovery, the deep check looks for causes a quick look misses: template text left on a page, social links that go to the theme maker, trust claims with nothing to back them up, urgency pop-ups and broken menu links.

You can also connect your Google Merchant Center account, read-only, to see Google’s own issues next to the store check.

Your site, policies and contact details are read from the pages themselves. Product data and product images need a product list, and a Squarespace site publishes none ShieldKit can read, so they come back Not checked. Business identity runs once you connect your Merchant Center account.

Merchant Center

How a Squarespace store gets its products to Google

Squarespace connects your account rather than handing you a feed address: you start from its Google shopping panel and set Merchant Center up from there. A few documented limits decide whether it will work for you at all, and they are worth reading before you start.

  1. 1

The integration runs on the Core, Plus, Advanced, Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced plans.

  2. 2

Only physical products sync. A Merchant Center catalogue that looks half-empty next to your store is usually this, working as documented.

  3. 3

Multi-client accounts — the advanced accounts an agency usually holds — and their sub-accounts can’t be connected. If your Merchant Center sits inside one, that is the blocker rather than your products.

  4. 4

If the account isn’t verified yet, Squarespace has you paste a verification tag into your site header.

What usually goes wrong on Squarespace

  • You choose what Google shows from Merchant Center, not Squarespace

Squarespace syncs your physical products and leaves the choosing to Google: there is no way to sync only some of them. To stop one showing, exclude it in Merchant Center.

  • A policy page has to be linked, not just made

A Squarespace page sits outside your navigation until you put it in one. Add each policy to your footer so a shopper, and Google, can reach it from any page.

  • Contact details where they show on every page

Google asks for at least one of a business address, phone number, email, contact form, or social media business profile on your store, so a Squarespace contact form does count. What matters is that it is easy to find before checkout — the footer shows it on every page — and that someone answers it.

  • The business details on the account

Your site’s business name and address are read against the ones on your Merchant Center account. Where a trading name differs from the registered one, use the same wording in both places.
